Female Record Broken at Habitat 5K
Honesdale, PA – Habitat for Humanity of Wayne County held their annual “Run for the Roses,” 21st Annual 5K Run/Walk, on Saturday, August 27, 2016. A total of 141 participants ran or walked to show their support for the work the local Habitat for Humanity does throughout the county.
The race and male overall winner was Ben Wilken with a time of 18:23.95. The 17-year-old is a member of the Wayne Highlands Cross Country team. Jennifer Korty, of Forest City, crossed the finish line as the female overall winner while setting a new female course record of 19:03.81. The previous record of 19:20 was held by Lindsey Pender. Trophies were awarded to the first place overall male and female finishers.
Habitat President, Mark Graziadio, fired the starter’s pistol at 9 a.m. to get the race started at the Honesdale High School Track Complex off Terrace Street. The course was a winding 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) through Wayne County farmland. The finish line was at the Track Complex.

Medals were awarded to the first, second, and third place male and female runners in the designated age groups. Awards were also given to the first, second, and third place walkers (not by age group).
Habitat would like to thank Wayne Highlands School District for use of facilities and sound system, Commonwealth Health for the on-site ambulance, Castek’s for the flowers for male and female winners, Scranton Running: Bruce and Justin for the timing and results, local businesses featured on the back of the race shirts, and the many volunteers who offered their time to make this race happen, especially Richelle Stephens, Habitat’s Race Coordinator.
Habitat for Humanity of Wayne County was founded in 1990 by Thomas VanOrden, Jesse Fisher, May and Mel Rutherford, Bud Rue, Peg and Dale Rosenburg, William Mamber, Dorothy Samson, and John Buckley. The non-profit organization celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2015. Habitat’s vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live.
Habitat for Humanity of Wayne County recently completed Home #20 in Canaan Meadows, Waymart, PA. They are currently working on the rehabilitation of Home #21 on Ridge Street in Honesdale, PA.
